| Determined not to let a longtime El Paso establishment die, El Pasoan Mauricio Olivares re-opened Seafood Galley at 1130 Geronimo last July, after former owner Max Long closed it in October of 2008.
“I’d eaten here since I was a little kid, so I was disappointed to see it go,” Olivares said.
He is now proud to be the third owner of the restaurant, and he’s kept the classics while adding some fresh new twists to the restaurant’s menu and ambiance.
Huge flat screen televisions and a full bar now adorn the sea-faring decor of the restaurant, which is offering Friday night drink specials and live music as well as daily happy hours. Their senior discount is still one of the best in town, at 10 percent anytime, any day.
New on the menu are the Ensenada Fish Tacos - lightly breaded cod wrapped in soft tortillas and garnished with fresh cabbage and salsa, the Chipotle BBQ Oysters and the Salmon Spinach Salad.
But they’ve kept a lot of the favorites - Max’s Clam Chowder, Fresh Catch Tampiqueña and Coconut Shrimp (the secret ingredient is Malibu Rum). Their classic onion rings have a new twist, too.
“The secret to our onion rings is in the homemade batter,” said Olivares. “It’s just the right amount of our secret-recipe batter, fried and served hot. It’s completely different than pre-battered onion rings.”
Also new on the menu are sweet potato fries, a crab burger and more grilled and fresh salad and wrap items.
Olivares is also proud to report that he was able to get back some of the original chefs.
“It’s still the same Seafood Galley,” Olivares said. “Some cooks are still with us, so the recipes are the same.”
Seafood Galley is open seven days a week. During happy hour, 5 - 7 p.m. Monday - Friday, their signature margaritas, well and long-necks are $2. Food prices range, on average from about $6 to about $15.
Call them at 774-4246.
